Stacking Rocks...

I'm not sure when or why this stacking of rocks became a thing, or even who thought it would be a great idea to stack rocks to begin with, but sometimes it's kinda cool.  And often the finished "stack" is a work of art.

I've been doing some pondering and realized life if like a stack of rocks. Everyday we add another rock to our stack. Sometimes it tumbles down and we have to start over. Sometimes the time and place isn't right for that particular rock. Sometimes we need another rock for support.

The most important thing, I think, is to have a firm foundation. Without a firm foundation, our stack of rocks will fall. Sooner or later...it will fall.  And our life is like that too.  We need a firm foundation.  I'm not gonna get all preachy but think about what you are building your life on.  Is it solid and steady and truth?

Another thing needed in rock stacking and life is persistence. If we don't persist, then our rock stack will never get built. And our lives will stagnant. We won't be happy or fulfilled.

I know it is hard to persist in the face of obstacles. But, as  Andy Andrews says in The Traveler's Gift, we must persist without exception. If we do, we will find a way over those obstacles and create a life that has meaning and joy.

So, today...think about the foundation you are stacking your rocks on. And persist...without exception.

I also like the idea of how stacked rocks will guide us from being lost. We can look back at what we have done when we make a wrong turn finding our way back to the beginning.

I need to so some research but I think they used stack rocks as property markers at one time. I definitely am going to look in to it.

I also thing stacked rocks teach patience and perseverance. It takes patience to piece our lives back together one rock at a time.

Definitely a lot of patience required. On both fronts...stacking rocks and putting lives back together.

Another way to look at the stack of rocks can be as markers of what has happened internally. Sometimes, persisting without exception does not show on the outside, and you have to name each rock for yourself, so at least you know that the stack is there.

There are several mentions in Old Testament about leaving a stack of rocks in the place where something momentous happened to the individual.

Very True. When Israel crossed the Red Sea was one time...the rocks were taken from the middle of the "riverbed" and stacked on the shore as a memorial. For all generations to remember. So, stacking rocks goes WAY back. :-)

Great post. A few years ago when I was on a writer's retreat, one day I was out for an afternoon walk and we came across a gentleman whose yard was full of stacked rock sculptures. The way they balanced so precariously on each other was fascinating. Your lessons here are right on. If that gentleman hadn't been persistant and had a firm foundation his yard would not have attracted us. And life is a lot like that. Stacked rocks and the stacker have many lessons to teach us.

I remember taking a hike a couple of years ago with a tremendous view. My group began stacking some rocks, then the ranger came by and said we couldn't do that. So we starting knocking them over, then he said we couldn't do that. He said, step away from the rocks. Lesson: stack, but don't get caught! Great piece Jean!

I sorta understand...but some of the rules are silly. And yeah, don't get caught. :-)

I think I'll make a small sand garden in my office. You know the ones where you rake it to ease stress? But, I'm going to find smaller rocks & stack them, so it will be visual to me as I accomplish things in my life. Great post!
